flickering lights when playing video games

so my roommate just called me into his room. he was playing mordhou and was in character creation. when he moves the sliders for his characters, the floor lamp next to his desk strobes. i think its some kind of electrical short, but it only does this when he moves sliders in the game. has anyone experienced this weird phenomenon before?
