Ty Auckland, for the punch I get

As an asian, just punched by a bum at the CBD a few hours ago. I just moved to auckland few days ago, used to live in hamilton, still confused right now, y it will happen. Is it the normal life in Auckland near queen street? Maybe it's too rough for a district near universities IMO? And I guess nothing will happen if I go to the police? It happened in front of the commercial bay, just on the square, I believe many people saw it. So, may I ask what does local people normally do to avoid such things.
