Ortho pushing me to get Jaw Surgery.
Hello! Found this subreddit and seems like the perfect place for this.
For context I am a 29 year old male, growing up we were very poor and so Braces (and general dentistry) wasn't a great option, as such my teeth were in rough shape. I'm in better financial shape now and putting an emphasis on health. (Losing weight, 50ibs down, but more to go will take at least another year to reach my weight goal).
For reference, I am not unhappy with my facial appearance (though that could change as I lose weight) But I do have an underbite that my Orthodontist recommends I get corrected with Leforte 1 jaw surgery to bring my top jaw which is too small forward. I have a consult with the Oral surgeon in December and I'm told there is an over one year wait list for surgery.
Ultimately I'm uncertain on whether I should do this surgery. The Orthodontist was really pushing it making me feel like maybe it's necessary? They provided two options, one involving the surgery and another (not recommended) to remove some teeth and straighten them as best he can. But he recommends we do that AND the surgery.
For me the crowding and fact that it means my teeth look crooked are my biggest issue. I never smile with my teeth because of it and when I do I try to hide my teeth. The bite doesn't bother me eating, and I have never been bothered by the underbite.
That being said I do have breathing troubles I am a mouth breather and I've heard this surgery can help with that. Though my family doctor said that he finds that unlikely and I shouldn't do it just to help my breathing.
The pain/recovery doesn't bother me with the surgery, but rather im afraid that it will permanently alter me in a negative, or undesirable way that cannot be undone, (make my face worse, weaken my jaw, nerve damage, other complications).
At the same time if I knew it would improve my bite/appearance with zero risk of side effects I would do it no questions asked. The cost doesn't concern me. I've also been considering veneers or implants since my teeth are yellow and particularly the molars have had many fillings.
But I also want an unbiased opinion since both the Orthodontist and Oral surgeon have a (financial) bias in this scenario.
So ultimately my questions are.
A: is jaw surgwey worth it in the long run for those who have done it? B: Is it problematic to not do the surgery and see what my Orthodontist can do without the surgery? C: should I wait a couple years and see how I feel after I have lost the weight I am working on now, or is there any rush? I am already older than most who get this surgery. D: if I go with B can I choose to do the surgery later if i decide i want it? E: What should I try to find out from my Oral Surgeon during the consult? I definitely want to find out more about complications, as well how common negative outcomes are. But again can't trust them because they have a bias.
Any help is appreciated! Sorry for the long post. This is something that has been on my mind for months and I hope to gain some insight here!
