Advice on guns?

I NEED advice on guns, I just died because I wanted to try shooting with my shotgun. My character was only 21 days in so no biggie. In rosewood I went to the church and started shooting but there was so many of them and I tripped and died. Any advice on how to start using guns would be helpful.
