New to the game, need help getting past the first casual filter - the UI.

A friend of mine invited me to play EVE and I've been wanting to try it for quite some time but constantly get overwhelmed at the ridiculous amount of menus and buttons. Tried to "learn as I play" but that's simply not possible and it only resulted in the destruction of my ship while attempting to mine a rock. The "for dummies/complete beginner" tutorials I checked online appear to assume the player already knows all menus and what they do by heart.

Am I too stupid to get into this game? If so, are there any semi-up-to-date resources I can check to get a better grasp of the game's basics aside from having to make new accounts to re-do the tutorial? I really want to get into it but I'm getting filtered HARD.
