How would you refer to a pet by name?

I’ve decided to start learning this language because I find it very interesting. I have a question that I am curious about. It is my understanding that when referring to a person, you call them “jan (Name)”. However, I think that jan means person, so it wouldn’t be used for non-people. Suppose I have a pet dog named Maggie (or Maki), what would she be called? Would she be “soweli Maki”?
