Should Silent Hill have writing like MyHouse.wad?

Discussion

I hear a lot of talk about what kind of stories new Silent Hill games should tell and while it's often not the best resource, sometimes creepypasta-esque internet horror stories are really where the good horror is. Hear me out on this.

Have you guys heard of MyHouse.wad? It had a minor blow up in pop-culture awareness earlier this year as a surprise horror-themed DOOM II mod that takes a lot of cues from P.T. If you haven't heard of it, do yourself a favor and get it now. Here's the mod and where you can buy DOOM II if you don't already have it. Get yourself GZDOOM to run it too since you need it for all the clever illusions MyHouse pulls off.

For everyone else, here's the music to set the tone.

MyHouse.wad takes a lot of that horror style that P.T. really introduced especially the concept of repeating rooms with new context and small details changing that need puzzling over to progress. Even the concept of progress was itself elusive. Maybe this was the end of the game but we just haven't understood the story that was already told? Repeat playthroughs ensue. In my opinion, Silent Hill does best when its ending encourages repeat playthroughs (SH1, SH2, SH:SM) and the best way to do that is to actually withhold information.

MyHouse.wad takes the player through a seemingly normal house with not much context or much to work with. It's just a house with some DOOM enemies in it. If you finish the map like normal, it just takes you to DOOM II's second level Underhalls as if only the first map was modded. However, if you continue, completing Underhalls takes you straight back to MyHouse. There is a right and wrong way to finish the level and the "right" way is wrong. So you have to dig in.

If you play far enough, you'll see a powerup outside the window. Having nothing else to do, you might try to go get it. Once outside, however, it's gone and in the windows all the enemies are back. DOOM II doesn't have a respawn mechanic (to my knowledge; not in vanilla anyway) so how did this happen? You go back inside and things are subtly different. Different pictures, new doors, a pickup you definitely would have noticed before... It's this kind of subtlety that keeps the player on edge and hopelessly engaged in what's unravelling. I'm not going to give you the play-by-play, but some rooms lead to other room and to other houses and to other ideas. It cannot be explained, only experienced.

Now, I think most of us agree that KONAMI are cheapskates and want the most money for the smallest amount of investment. This is part of why, to my knowledge, Silent Hill succeeded in the first place. A small studio making a small 20 hour (or less) game that encourages repeat playthroughs through story. Not a major grandiose action film-like game like Resident Evil, but an intimate and obscure event about digging into symbolism and meaning, something lost on later Silent Hill entries (SH:H, SH:D). If one independent developer can pull something like this off in a 30 year old engine that's had this much impact, getting a AAA developer to do something similar should be no problem (in theory.) Of course, indie devs tend to be much more personally driven with no deadlines and major studios have much more external pressure to muck up their work to compete with mainstream games (imo, Silent Hill isn't mainstream which is why it fails when it tries to compete with it.)

MyHouse.wad is the kind of writing I'd like to see a team of highly funded professionals tackle. Not necessarily with even the gameplay style with the repetitious environments, but just the subtle storytelling using small personal stories that go deeper than any over-memed overt capital "t" TRAUMA story. This DOOM II mod is about grief, love, abstractions of aging, and so much more in just a single map. Silent Hill needs to go deeper, not bigger. It's what sets it apart from other major series.

What do you all think? Have you played MyHouse.wad? Do you think it's a good direction for Silent Hill to try out? Are creepypastas cringe? Lemme know your thoughts :D
