I went to my first comp in over 5 years. Very happy but also sad that I was gone for so long
TLDR; I had a lot of fun and will definitely be going to comps agian
I can’t say for certain why I quit cubing back in 2018. Maybe it was the kids at school being mean. Maybe it was because I found other hobbies. But coming back to cubing this year was the best thing I could’ve done for my life. The comp was kinda far from where I live but I managed to make it and stick around for as long as I was able to.
The community is very healthy in my area and I met a lot of cool people and made lots of friends. I got to try out a few cubes that I’ve only seen on videos. I also got to show off my old 2017 Gan SM. Some of the kids there were shocked that an old cube like that could turn and be used so well. I’m glad that my dummy brain setup is comp viable to others. I got to talk with people my age and also learn some cool stuff from people you get than me.
One thing I will say is that some of these folks are really good at setting up cubes. I got to try some cubes that were the same that I have but they felt completely different. I really appreciate how I can get different perspective and feel from the same cube. Also I promised that I wouldn’t spend money on more cubes but I really want to pick up a WRM 9 ball core.
One of the guys there had two of them set up in completely different ways and I was very surprised. I really only stuck with Gan for so long because that’s what I’ve had for the past 5 years. Didn’t by any other cubes at all during my off period. My 11 and XS, I only bought this year.
Also I felt kinda weird about being a cuber for so long and not being sub 20 yet. But I can’t change the past. I can only improve from here. Since some people were willing to help teach me cool stuff I owe it to them and to my cubes to get faster. I didn’t compete in this comp because I missed the registration but I hope I can try again in the next comp.
It was great and was definitely a good change of pace. I needed to humble myself after being the fastest person at my work. It’s hard to find a good cuber in the wild. I had a lot of fun and I want to go the next one but it’s a 4 hour drive from my place and I don’t want to do that. Idk I’ll see what I can do.
