What happens when the building's last elevator breaks?

We have 4 elevators in our building, and two have been out of service for a month. The third one just broke last night so we have one elevator for almost 400 people and they have cancelled some move-ins that were planned for today.

The schedule for repairs is "indeterminate."

What happens if the 4th elevator fails? I'm on the 40th floor and currently I can only use the stairs to go down, as there are several one-way doors that don't allow me to go up.

Is it reasonable to demand a key to the doors so I can use the stairs to get up as well as down?

My calves are killing me but this morning it's a 45 minute wait to get to the lobby so I'm going to use the stairs but getting back up at 6pm might take even longer.
