Neighbor’s Eviction Notice Posted on my door
Hi all, I live in a high rise apartment building in MD. I’m in unit 610, this morning i woke up to an eviction notice pasted to my door, Ive never been late on rent and actually prepaid my rent for November a week early.
After the initial panic, i realized it was not addressed to me. It had someone else’s name on it. It also was for unit 616. That said, it was a form with preprinted blank fields for tenant name, unit #, etc. It looks like the details they printed in those fields were printed a little too high so some of the letters/numbers are cut off at the top, so the 6 at the end of 616 looks like a 0 since the top of the 6 is cut off.
I emailed a picture to my complex manager and she replied saying it was the Sheriff’s office who posted it and that they sometimes have a lack of attention to detail, but i’m fine and in good standing with the complex.
THAT SAID, i have heard horror stories about the sheriff’s office mistakenly evicting the wrong tenant & clearing out their apartment. because of the way the form printed (with the top of the 6 cut off), it can be misread as unit 610 at first glance. you have to really hold it close to your face to see that it’s for unit 616. my fear is that when/if they come back to clear out the apartment, they’ll come to mine by mistake.
Am i freaking out for no reason? what do I do if they come knocking? I have a dog and i’m scared if they come and i’m not home that they’ll surrender my dog to animal control and clear out my unit.
