Scared to work again/changing routine
I’m putting this under General Question/Discussion because it’s more about disrupting my routine than work.
I’ve been mostly unemployed for about 5 years now. I work a little part time from home, but it’s really only a couple of hours per week so not a big commitment. I really need to start working again, full time, before I lose all motivation for life and have absolutely no money.
I know I could get a minimum wage job pretty easily, especially at this time of year where stores are hiring for holiday help. But over these five years, I’ve really struggled with getting my mental health back on track (I left my last full time job after having a breakdown basically) and a lot of that has to do with the routines I’ve finally been able to establish over the last 9 months or so. Yes, it’s taken me that long to really feel capable of keeping up with the basics. And I’m terrified that getting a job, especially one where the hours would probably vary daily/weekly, would just disrupt all that and throw me back to where I was before mentally.
There’s also the fact that although I feel like I’ve done a lot of work and gotten a lot better with my depression and some ADHD symptoms, some of my ADHD symptoms have gotten a lot worse! I’m starting to wonder if it’s a hormonal thing (I’m pretty sure I’m pre-menopausal) and going back to work when I’m feeling like this feels even more difficult. Even if that’s not it, I’m not sure what the options are either way. Would being prescribed hormones help? Don’t those come with a lot of other side effects?
I guess I’m just looking for any advice or similar stories where things worked out. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been long term unemployed (especially when older, I’m 48 now) and went back to work and it was fine.
