Finding a service industry job in Toronto with no experience?

Hi there!

I'm in my 30's with a full-time job in an industry that is completely unrelated to hospitality, and no prior restaurant experience. However I would like to get my foot in the door in the service industry in Toronto on a part-time basis for a number of reasons.

Obviously the extra income is important but I also really want the opportunity to meet a lot of new people, learn more about food and wine, network with people in the industry, etc.

I know there are several factors working against me; obviously having no experience, but also that I don't have full availability and we are about to head into winter when the industry slows down.

I plan on aiming for a hosting/support staff job; not as a server or bartender. But is this doable in Toronto? Am I arrogant for thinking this is possible? Are people going to look at me sideways if I go around and hand out resumes with no service industry experience in my 30's? Any advice on making this a successful venture?
