Going 50/50 in a relationship

in my past and current relationships, I’ve always asked for 50/50 split in expenses, and I kinda thought it was common. I believe nobody is anal enough that they split down the line to the exact cent or the smaller expenses but rather it’s like you pay one meal, I pay the next. And then there’s special occasions e.g birthdays, anniversaries, where of course one person will treat the other.

Ladies of Reddit, is this a uncommon arrangement? Does it mean that I’m selling myself short? Cus someone said to me “always going 50/50 means that you are low maintenance and that breeds low effort men?” Is effort to women nowadays only based on availability to pay for things?
