Advice on which mode to run TMC2208 in

Hi, one of the stepper drivers in my artillery X1 died but I damage the board when I went to change it. I now have a new board and a set of TMC2208 drivers. Watching a teaching tips video, he says there are 3 modes they can be run in. Does anyone know the best mode to run them in the X1, I would assume legacy as they are a drop in replacement. In legacy mode, do they still need coding into the firmware?
