New to the home, new to pools

After reading through a few posts here, I'm seeing pieces of the plan that I need to move forward but would like more clarity on what I can do and what I have to hire a professional for.

We just bought the house and want bring this old pool into working order. It's been abandoned, likely for a decade. I'm sure there's parts of this process I can do myself with a few tools, some parts, some knowledge, and for a reasonable cost before I call a professional (if it gets to that).

Based on the photos below, I would like to redo the pipework, pump and parts myself. I just need to know what to buy.

I would also like to clean the pool myself, but have read about the combination of chlorine and acid being a no-go to continue living. So would I do one and then the other? Or just one? Which one?

My biggest questions are these:

  1. What type of pool is this?
  2. Do I have to get a liner or something else to cover the inside of the pool or can I just fill it and do the chems work once it's cleaned and repaired?
  3. When I drain the pool, I've heard it can smell pretty bad. I've contacted my municipality and they said no to the street, and no to the yard. Where do I drain it to?
