Thermostat fix.

I am short on money at the moment and I need to fix my thermostat. It been a problem since I got my car and it hasn't ever caused me any problems except for taking a long time for the heat to turn on in the winter. Is this an easy fix and do I need to replace it? I have only ever done an oil change and brake pads.
