Homozygous MTHFR, COMT and Vyvanse, bupropion
Hi all, I’m 36/F with ADHD, (mostly) seasonal depression, homozygous slow COMT + homozygous MTFHR (c677t). I started taking 15mg Deplin earlier this year, which has been pretty helpful for depression overall, but my ADHD symptoms were still present.
I tried Adderall 10mg and was way too jittery. Recently started taking Vyvanse 20mg, which seems to help my mood and focus quite a bit with minimal side effects (as long as I don’t drink coffee or alcohol).
After a week on that (per my psych), I added 150mg bupropion XL and only made it 2 days because it made me so tired and I felt like I was super “off”. Genetically, I’m a poor metabolizer of bupropion, but wanted to try it anyway at a low dose to take the edge off of seasonal depression. I know bupropion takes a little bit to kick in properly, but my job doesn’t allow me to have “off” days per se.
I’m curious what others’ experiences have been who have similar genetic profiles, but I’m also wondering how exactly Vyvanse is working while bupropion is not since they both affect dopamine and I metabolize dopamine slowly thanks to slow COMT. I’ve been reading about it a lot, but haven’t been able to exactly figure it out.
TL:DR Looking for better explanation of the biochemistry of Vyvanse, Wellbutrin and slow COMT, MTHFR (and also anecdotal experiences of others with similar genetic profiles).
Thank you so much! (P.S sorry if I did this wrong-I’m a long time Reddit reader, but I don’t often post lol)
