Stuck joining friends game at 80%

Like the title said, we are on steam and every time I try to join him, he starts lagging on his home network and then the game kicks me out at 80%. We have tried turning off steam cloud; joining through direct code while he opens the game through file directory and joining at different save states. None of these have worked. Can someone please help.
