Supermarket meat going off early

Has anyone found the meat they buy in the supermarket to be of awful quality even when in date?

We just opened a packet of chicken thighs which had 4 days left before they expire. They smelled soured and gone off.

We're sick of wasting money on bad meat, bar going to a butchers, how can we avoid this?
