Sample clearance questions.

I'm a musician looking to release my first album soon. I wrote all the songs myself but on some songs I used samples of existing songs. The samples are are all just small individual pieces of the existing songs, like drum breaks or ambient loops, but I did still take them directly to use them in my composition, and in most cases manipulated them in some way.

I don't expect a large amount of popularity from my music, and these samples are from relatively obscure or no longer active musical acts. If I released these songs how they are, am I likely to be hit with fines or even sued because of it? Thank you in advance.
