I want to play a guy's role. I'm definitely screwed.
I'm nonbinary, but I'm extremely uncomfortable presenting femininely. There are roles for men and women in the upcoming audition, but it's set in the 1940's and the women will inevitably all be in dresses. One is even in a maid dress at a point. I live in conservative southern England, and I'm only open about my actual identity with my closest friends, so I'm between a rock and a hard place of either getting uncomfortable via attempting for a role I won't like, or getting uncomfortable by suffering questions about why I'm going for the male parts, or being told I can't.
I'm thinking this might all be a big mistake. Sorry if this isn't the place to put this.
I know theatre is infamous for breaking conventional gender roles, but again, small group in conservative south England mostly comprised of people twice my age. I'm a little terrified.
