Struggling with strong fear during meditation
Hello all! I have been a practicing Buddhist for years, though I became more disciplined and dedicated this year. I have been meditating for 30 minutes a day for the past two months (prior to that it was 5-10 minutes on and off), generally experiencing positive results (though not always positive feelings).
I'm writing because recently there is an event in the future that I believe has been really interfering with my meditation. I don't want to get deep into details, but I am no contact with a family member. My sister will soon be having a baby, and she is not no contact with this family member. I want to participate in her life and her child's life, which means I will be entering again into situations with the person I am no contact with.
Knowing that this period of time is coming up is causing my mind to be very unsettled during meditation, and my previous strategies are not as effective for calming it. It's not necessarily thoughts of the event, but my mind is very jumpy and bouncy and it's difficult to focus on the points of focus that used to work for me. I'm finding I need to use multiple points of focus, and sometimes to engage with the feeling of anxiety (thinking about it) in order to calm my mind enough during meditation. There's a feeling of fear and anxiety that I am trying to accept, but my meditation sessions are becoming very frustrating because it's so much harder to calm the mind. Generally I am finding impatience + frustration (why won't my mind calm?!) bound up with bodily fear and tied with the idea that meditation will somehow protect me. But I have found I need to actively think in order to counteract and calm the thoughts, which feels counter-productive.
The frustration was making me procrastinate meditation, so I have since adjusted to do two 20 minute meditations instead of one 30 minute meditation per day. I don't think I'm struggling with compassion for this person (I have done much therapy), but I do have PTSD and the fear seems more tied to my body than any specific thoughts or fantasies, though I could be wrong. Does anyone have ideas for what I can do, either during or outside of meditation, to help this be less of an obstacle? My goal is just to get my meditation back to a place where it is not such a frustrating struggle. Do I continue what I've been doing to try to settle the mind and accept this is just a difficult period? Is examining the fear while my mind is still unsettled feeding into it? Is there a sutra touching on this that I may have missed?
Any thoughts would be welcome.
