Why are mechs considered war crimes and banned?

I'm pretty sure starships armed to the teeth and orbital bombardment from capital ships would be more dangerous, right? So why are they still allowed?

I just wanna see some cool robot suits fighting. Armoured Core and Halo 4's Mantis are the only mechs you can use in modern games as far as I can tell :(
