Do we refer to a band as "it" or "them?"

As in, "I saw U2 play the O2 and they rocked!" or "I saw U2 play the Sphere and it rocked!"

The former sounds better, but a band name is a singular noun, isn't it?

To further complicate things, what if the band name is plural, like The Killers or the Fugees?
