Should I stop hoping for this opportunity to work out?

Job searching

Hi all, I am in a weird situation and I don't really know what to think about it now. In early September I was called by an executive from a small but lucrative remote-based company. I had applied for a contract position there some months ago but never heard back about it. Well, this executive called me to ask if I would be interested in a different position that had just opened up. I met most of the qualifications and the compensation was at the top of my range, so I said yes, I was interested. They told me a recruiter from a third-party recruiting company would call me for a pre-screening, no need to apply on their website as they already had my resume.

I spoke to the recruiter for about an hour of pre-screening in mid September, and she told me I sounded like a great candidate and that they would contact me soon about the interview process. I sent an updated resume (more targeted for the role). Since that call, I have not heard a peep. I emailed the recruiter two weeks after the pre-screen and she said she had not heard from the company, but would reach out and let me know. Last week, I emailed the recruiter again to see if the position was still open or if they needed anything else from me. Once again, they said they would ask for an update and get back with me soon. I was excited to have this fall into my lap but now I'm feeling it was too good to be true. I just don't understand why they would seek me out if they weren't even going to give me an interview. What would you do in my situation?
