Question about Lady Silence’s Old Partner

Just finished the book and am a little confused…who is the old inuk that was shot when Lady Silence first encountered Gore’s party? I would assume it’s her father, but isn’t she supposed to be the daughter of shamans (forgot the Inuit word) who also have their tongue out? I just remember when he dies in the book he has final words, and only she is described as without a tongue. I definitely missed something…
