AI developers are facing accusations of illegally scraping copyrighted content from news publications and journalists to train their models, according to a white paper from the News Media Alliance (NMA). The NMA's research suggests that AI models are using significantly more news content than other sources in their training data, and this has led to AI systems "copying and using publisher content in their outputs," thus infringing on copyright and competing with news outlets. The NMA has submitted its findings to the US Copyright Office and has recommended measures to restrict the ingestion of copyrighted materials by AI models.
