Medford has it all, greenery, history, bakeries…

To be fair, a lot of the salons/barber shops are generational exc. Zubeda’s and the chain ones in Target lot/Station Landing. The larger, fancier salons are trying to push out the ones that have been there for 30+ years, but they’re holding the line. We have a lot of residents in Medford who have been going to same shop for decades, they’re keeping the older salons going.
As for bakeries, yeah we have a lot. Is it super disproportionate to surrounding towns? Maybe. Winchester has 4 bakeries to a population of 23,000 so it’s one bakery per 5,750 folks. Excluding the commercial bakeries located in Medford (Piantedosi, Edelweiss, George’s) and the exclusively-donut shops, that leaves 12 bakeries in Medford. To a population of 65,000, that’s one bakery per 5,416 people. Not too different.
If you go by land mass though, Winchester has one bakery per 1.575 sq mile and Medford is one bakery per .72 sq mile.
What’s the point of all this math? Medford is a physically condensed city with more opportunities for small storefronts, with cheaper rents (relative to market, of course). That’s why we attract small businesses of this ilk (bakeries, hair salons, professional consulting). Less expensive rent, availability of smaller spaces.
How did you find the number of bakeries in Medford? The chamber of congress website is terribly off on hair salons with only 4 and I count 15 on Salem St alone..they show 14 bakeries, but a quick google search shows 30. Would love to see a business directory somewhere.
I have been to a few bakeries on Salem near Haines Sq, they leave me wanting more. I'm going to keep trying tho.
Modern, Arthur’s, LaCascia’s, Colette’s along Main St, too.
Colette’s
Yes, haven't been to Colette’s yet, but this may be more of what I seek. Thanks neighbor.
I didn't think I was crazy about eclairs...then I had one from Colette's and realized I just hadn't had a GOOD eclair until then.
Colette's 100%. I love this bakery because its not over the top with sugar. Their only rival would be Flour in Cambridge. I am excited having found them last year. I need not go to any other bakeries. Side note though, they are totally not cheap but worth every dime!
Thanks neighbor! Seems like a winner
Grepe and Baguette both are Hatian which means they have good patties, but everything else is secondary. I would love a place that did straight-up bread. Baguette's baguettes are very mediocre.
Sad to exclude the doughnut shops! 🍩
Award winning donut shops. And bagel shops.
I feel like that list is setting the bar pretty low.
Some days you get trolled, some days you are the troll?
Don't forget hair salons
It's been a while since I counted the ones just on Salem St across from Target leading towards the rotary to 93....there is at least 5 across from Target on Salem St and I don't even know how many in that part of the Target plaza next to the liquor store. Let's say at least 2.
And 6 delis on the same street.
