Where should I move to for a career in transportation planning?
I'm about to graduate from my Master's program in transportation planning and I feel like I'm ready for a change in scenery.
I've been a lifelong expat, growing up in Hong Kong, England, and Western MA, so I've been thinking about potentially pursuing a career abroad for the past year or so. It also helps that I have both US and EU citizenship, which makes working in Europe so much easier.
As of right now, I've been living in California for about 5 years, building up a network of friends and business connections, starting up a business with my best friend that's going very well, and have years of experience working on CA policy issues. However, I just don't see myself permanently living in a place with 115F (46C) summers, sprawling suburbs, and poor public transportation options. My friends either live very far away from me or are workaholics who work all 7 days of the week, so I end up spending most weekends alone. I love my alone time, but after a while it starts to get very lonely.
While I am considering US cities as well, I'm also very concerned about mass shootings (there was one in a nightlife area in my city 1-2 years ago), healthcare, and the lack of a work/life balance. Thankfully my rent is low, even for the area, which is why I haven't already made the jump to a new location.
Another thing I'm thankful for that is that there's really nothing that's tying me down here. My business is 100% virtual, I've already told my friends my intentions on leaving, and I'm open to learning a new language.
I've been thinking about moving back to the UK or possibly Ireland, since a) I already speak the language and already went through the culture shock, b) most of my classmates in primary school moved to England.
I've also been thinking about moving to the Netherlands or Scandinavia. I've never been to the Netherlands, but I really enjoyed my time visiting Copenhagen/Malmo. I just think that learning from the best people in the bicycle/transit planning world would be interesting and exciting.
Any advice on where to move to? Bonus points if you're familiar with the urban planning job market.
