Has the performance and stability improved with millions of small files?

A few years back I tried out Nextcloud and the desktop client software struggled hard when attempting to sync upwards of 2 million files and would often crash - sometimes leading to conflicts and file removal (data loss...not good).

The overall quantity of data wasn't that high in the grand scheme of things (only about a hundred gigabytes total). The server was considerably strong at the time (high clock speed Xeons, 32GB of RAM, SSD storage for the database and file storage), clients were of a similar configuration but also had NVMe drives for the NC directories.

In the course of troubleshooting back then I did things like increase PHP memory limits, remove timeouts and so fourth but wanted to check in to find out if anyone since has run more recent builds successfully with similar file structures.

Thanks.
