Program management

Career

Mods before you delete, just hear this out... there really isn't another robust forum on Reddit to ask this. I could post to r/jobs if you really felt this was not related to PM work.

I've interviewed for a job in a program office, with the title of "Program lead". However, the people in the office were more informally referring to it as "item manager". The R&R's listed in the req do sound like something a PM does - Plan work to be accomplished by team, prep schedules, develop project plans, make key technical decisions, provide guidance/decision making regarding product dev/integration, test/QA, etc.

When I spoke with everyone in person though, this "felt" almost like a procurement role with flavors of PM work mixed in with respect to budget, schedule and QA. This is in the field of government contracts. Has anyone here ever taken a job called "program lead" and/or "item manager"? If so, please describe your experience.
