Im having some weird PC trouble, anyone care to chip in?

Tech Support

This will be a long post with a tldr at the end.

PC Specs, had this pc x 3 years.

  • Windows 11 (currently doing a partial restore)
  • Asus Rog-strix b550-A with the shitty I225v intel chip (known to cause packetloss, stabalized with software option tinkering)
  • gigabyte 3070 vision OC, recently had issues with its temperatures causing crashes. so i re-thermal pasted the die to good success. Stable function since.
  • evga 750 watt gold power supply
  • corsair water cooler
  • ryzen 3800x
  • 4x corsair vengence 8gb running at 3200mhz XMP.
  • 1tb samsung evo NVME m.2 drive with a boot partition (c: drive)
  • 2tb samsung evo plus NVME m.2 drive with a fat32 (L: drive) patition, had steam library on it and some tv shows. (currently emtpy, recen factory formated.)
  • good airflow case. No con erns with temps.

The problem list:

  • i noticed that games played on the L drive 2tb ssd were crashing. It start with halo infinite, a game which has previously fine. Would launch game, get into menus, stable, start one match then blam, the game would freeze. I would alt f4, close out, and then be unable to restart the game at all after that point unless i restarted my pc. Many other game i tried to start would give "error, unable to start due to illegal partition" or start the crash as above with a freeze, then CTD. They would then give the same error about illegal partition. I reinstalled steam per online advice, which deleted all the games on the c: drive (good drive). I then tried to open some media (rick and morty) using vlc to play media on the L drive. It did not work, and then windows explorer crashed (this crash has windows explorer becoming non responsive and the desktop turning grey, with no windows keys anywhere that you could interface with. Crtl alt delete would still work, but was unable to force stop windows explorer. It then seemed when i trigured shutdown that the hole system just hung on that shutting down loading screen. I restarted the PC manually at that point. When i rebooted windows, I reattempted to open games on L drive, this time both RE4 and halo infinite could launch, but the same CTD occured not shortly after entering the first match.

  • This made me think, ok, maybe the L drive is corrupted, or the ram is fucked. I reseated all the ram and the m.2 drive at that point in time. I ran windows memory tool and found no problems.

  • I also ran windows memory tool to scan the ram, it found no issues. I downloaded crystaldiskinfo and mark, and both essenttialy said it was a healthy drive.

  • at this point, i restarted my pc. I noted increase load and shut down times. Which i found odd, because my hypothesis was this was a problem with L drive and c drive was the boot drive. I figured ok, odd and still need to make sure L drive is working but i decided to test the gpu and cpu.

  • i ran furmarks 3d, max temp for gpu was 75. -i ran furmarks cpu cruncher, and cpu temp maxed out at 82. No crashes.

I then decided to test the l drive by moving resident evil and halo infinite to the C drive.

  • resident evil worked much better, and did not crash.

  • halo infinite worked much better, and did not crash.

  • So i though huh, guess its the wails of a dying SSD.

  • ans so at that point, i had a functioning C drive, suspect L drive and a resident evil, running well with max temp for gpu was 69, max temp cpu was 75, ran at 100% usage each. Good frames. No crashes. No suspicioun of gpu or cpu issues.

  • I formatted the SSD and left it at that. Figured problem solved.

And then it start glitching out again about 30 minutes later. I played a round of tarkov, and got killed. The game froze on the death screen, and then could not be closed. When i tried alt f4, it wouldnt work. Task manager wouldnt work. Windows explorer then crashed again, causing the desktops to turn grey. I hard restarted the pc. I figured the problem ran deeper then hardwar at this point so i ran the windows registry verification using sfc scannow. It repaired some files. The problem still remains.

  1. Games crash at random times. Doesnt matter what platform, or whether they use directx11.

  2. Once they crash, windows explorer goes too. You cannot load anything or open anything.

  3. the performance off the ssds and the computers ability to shutdown and restart are affected by this.

So for now i am trying a system restore as it seem like a windows thing. The computer went from working great 3 days ago to suddenly being completly fucked.

Any other ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
