Sounds like a bad starter, but fine if pressing gas pedal

2006 CRV auto. Recently started getting a hard start and a scraping noise figured the armature on the starter is dragging. Someone suggested possible fuel issue and to give it gas while starting (just barely pressing the pedal right before it turns over). It starts fine with the gas pedal technique. What with the fuel would cause this?
