Smash 6 does not need to be a port of Ultimate or a hard reboot. It just needs to be Smash 6.

SpoilerDiscussion

It seems like everyone either wants the next smash game to either be a port of ultimate or a hard reboot that cuts it down to like 20 characters. And it makes me just want to scream that Smash is more than just the character roster.

What i want, and hopefully what Nintendo wants, is smash 6 to be more fun than ultimate. So they should not cling to ultimate's roster so dearly they refuse to make a new game or go for the nuclear option and hit the reset button. What would be wrong with doing what they've done for the first 4 games - get as many characters as you can, add some new ones, and try to make a good roster rather than a big one. Yes some characters may get cut, and the roster might have to be smaller, but that is just one tiny part of the game.

For one, if smash 6 is missing characters from ultimate, that won't make it automatically "inferior" like some people say. Why? Because it's going to have NEW characters that Ultimate won't. Every fighting game has had a new game with a smaller roster. And secondly, if Smash ^ has better GAMEPLAY, then i guarantee NO ONE will be mad about a smaller roster.

For example, Mortal Kombat Armageddon had an ultimate-style roster with almost every MK character ever made. Then in the next game, MK9, the roster still had alot of characters, but the roster was way smaller, and many fan favorites were cut. What did people think? They fucking LOVED it, becuase the characters that DID return were way better designed, the new characters that were introduced were awesome, and the GAMEPLAY was so much better.

Same exact thing is happening right now with Mortal Kombat 1. MK1 has a way smaller roster than MK11, and a lot of people's favorites are gone. But almost everyone would way rather play MK1 than MK11 because the GAMEPLAY is much better.

*okay MK1 is probably not the best example as that game is bogged down with live service mess that makes people not want to play it but that has nothing to do with the roster.

And that's the more important reason why we need a Smash 6 and not just a port of ultimate. Yeah they could add some more characters, add some more features, clean the game up, but if it's still ultimate it's not going to improve. The gameplay would still be the same and have all the issues it has. There'd still be a lackluster story mode and online. There's only so much a game can be "enhanced". Yeah Street fighter II turbo was great, but it's no Street fighter III. MK11 ultimate fixed alot of problems with the base game, but it's no MK1.

Of course, smash is different than other fighting games. It's a crossover, so the roster does matter. Which is why this asinine idea of the next game being a hard reset with like 20 characters is also not a good solution. Nintendo knows people want a big roster, of course they want to bring back everyone if they could. But if they can't, why would they pick the opposite of what people want?

They should rather make another big roster, maybe a little smaller, but smalller as in like 68 characters this time rather than 82. Because most of the smash roster would have no problem returning. Most of the rosters is characters owned by Nintendo or companies very close to Nintendo. If some get cut, they can make up for a smaller size with:

  1. a BETTER selection of characters

  2. NEW characters that are better than those who may have to be cut

  3. BETTER gameplay that makes using new and returing characters more fun

  4. More modes that let people play in ways Ultimate never could.

Because there are a lot of improvements that need to be made in a new game. We need better stages, a better story mode, a better stage builder, more minigames, better music selections, and of course a better online.

If the next game has all that, nobody is going to be so upset that they can't play as some of the characters they used to. If characters like Simon or Hero don't make it into Smash 6, but Smash 6 has new characters like Raiden or 2B to replace them, AND has better gameplay and online, no one's gonna be that mad. And if you really are, hopefully the switch 2 is back compat.
