mesh strainer

I'm a complete newbie to roasting, and don't want to completely dive in just yet. I ordered some india beans and that I want to try roasting. Any advice for DIY roasting? I have a cast iron skillet I'm gonna try using, and also have a mesh strainer. Thoughts?
