Where are all my AHS peeps at?
How you holding up? How’s your department doing? Is your staffing as bad as it is in my department? I’ve worked EMS for 10 years and I’ve gotta say this is probably the worst I’ve seen things.
Most of our legacy staff have either gone LTD, WCB, or dropped to casual. Even more not only left the job, but left the entire profession and industry altogether. Most of us left over have been riding in the red zone for so long we’ve progressed from having a mental injury to having a full on mental disability. In addition, the government keeps introducing all these new regulatory “variances” to the EMS Act permitting sketchy stuff like responding by yourself with an ambulance in a “PRU” like capacity and hope either a firefighter or police officer can drive you back to the hospital with your patient. Or having a fresh, straight out of school paramedic, placed solo on a PRU (Tahoe), and having to run potentially an entire mass casualty incident by yourself while your help could be hours away. Staff are having full on panic attacks when they find out they might have to potentially run an entire code on a unfamiliar scene by themselves.
Anyways, more of a rant I guess. Seems like the “human factor” has disappeared, and our “leadership team” has gone silent, absent, or paralyzed. It’s like ever Supervisor and Manger knows we have a problem, identified the problem, knows how to fix said problem, and then sometime along the implementation/approval stage everything goes to shit. It’s maddening.
