A Bass’ Lament
Man, I’ve been classically trained to sing, for 4 years and have been singing even longer than that but none of it changes the fact that I have a low range… Although I appreciate the odd chance I get to sing an E2, being low is so inconvenient when it comes to singing. With my band, every time I have to transpose music so it’s in a “singable” range, and I often miss out on drama roles, because my range is too low. Most of the popular bass singers were alive in the 60’s and the handful of popular artists today can be counted on your hands. If only I could somehow extend my confident range an extra half octave so I wouldn’t struggle with buble and sinatra… The choral parts can be pretty cool though!
