please help - i seriously think i have rabies
hi, 21F. USA, not vaccinated. 12 days ago, five minutes after i woke up, i developed painful parasthesia in my left hand that didn’t go away for probably about 5 hours. later that night i developed a soreness in my hips that spread to my left leg causing severe leg pain that left me unable to sleep. the next day, i woke up with left flank pain and a complete loss of appetite. went to the ER, was negative for everything that could’ve been causing it. that night i developed a globus sensation in my throat and woke up the next day with an extremely hoarse voice and a dry scratchy throat with a ton of mucus that wouldn’t go away. over the next few days i started to have a bit of difficultly swallowing that just got worse and worse. i think it was the second night of the throat issues that i developed a fever. i haven’t taken my temp since that night because i’m too scared to, but most of the time i feel hot and feverish. i’ve also been almost completely bedridden since the second day of throat issues. im incredibly dizzy and lightheaded all the time and my legs are extremely weak and wobbly. my partner has to help me to use the bathroom, but that’s the only time i can get up. cant shower, brush my teeth, etc. can barely even sit up. this has gotten progressively worse since it started, as i used to be able to walk around and do at least some of my daily tasks.
for around 3 or 4 days now i’ve also been experiencing quick tingling sensations in small spots on my hands and fingertips, not like paresthesia but more like an electric current, that lasts anywhere from a second to a minute and is usually in my left hand. sometimes they’re recurrent, over and over for hours. occasionally i will get lasting paresthesia in spots on my left foot.
it is currently day 12. i am aware the initial symptoms can last 2-10 days before things start going downhill. on day 10, it became increasingly difficult to swallow. water felt like it just didn’t want to go down. it’ll either take forever or come back up right away, usually both. on day 11, i developed the worst headache of my LIFE (was crying and screaming etc, lasted for hours until i broke and did a migraine massage and took tylenol, and it still keeps coming back), and i started developing very painful esophagus spasms out of the blue, around halfway down my throat. feels like being stabbed from the inside. when i try to sip water, most of the time now the spasms will occur directly after. the thought of drinking terrifies me, i cant even think about water without getting incredibly anxious. i hold off on drinking as long as i can and probably only drink a cup a day total.
i don’t know what to do. i can think of a few instances that could’ve caused me to have it and that just makes everything worse. a couple years ago i was stupidly playing with a feral cat that was drooling all over me, i played with a puppy at the vet back in march(?) that was scratching and play-biting me, and from may to september i had acting jobs at a barn that functions as a theater that is infamous for having a ton of bats. spent a lot of time outside by myself at night there too. i also worked as a vet secretary in late 2022 and played with many animals.
because of working there (and having parents in the medical field), i am very aware of the symptoms and progression of rabies, and in the past have extensively studied many cases out of curiosity. from what i’ve learned, i match up with a decent amount of cases and could very well have it. i’m so scared, i don’t know what to do. i’ve barely eaten anything in 11 days (500 calories a day maybe) and my appetite has just gotten worse to the point where i can’t eat anything. it’s been 2 days. i tried yesterday but i got so nauseous and lightheaded that i had to stop after a bite. i am so lightheaded and wobbly and dizzy and my vision isn’t even the same. sometimes i almost feel confused. i have a splitting headache as we speak, and i can tell it’s starting to feel like yesterday’s when i couldn’t handle it. i am so beyond restless and anxious, can’t stop moving and scratching my head and rubbing my face. i don’t have covid, and i don’t have any usual sick/cold symptoms like sinus issues. i’m too terrified to go to the hospital and am trying to wait it out until i know i’m in the clear, but i’m scared out of my mind. any insight is welcome. thank you so much for taking the time to read.
