Is it normal to be yelled at at work by a coworker with “more experience”?
I am a manufacturing engineer and was helping a fellow ME with a sample run in a piece of automation. It was supposed to be a simple test of running a new style of boxes in a piece of automation, but turned out to be more complicated. We were having some issues with running the sample, but we were slowly making progress. Unfortunately, I had to leave the sample run for a .5hr meeting and later a 1.5hr meeting. Please not that I was never asked to be at this sample run. I just wanted to help.
When I got back from my second meeting, I asked for an update from the other ME. He said that we had to tell our customer that we can’t use the boxes. I was confused as there didn’t seem to be much progress since I left, so I asked what part of the automation needed to be changed to make the boxes work. It was then that he YELLED at me and said “The cartons are too thick! They aren’t going to work! I would know more about this than you!” By yelled, I mean he literally raised his voice and yelled this at me.
I am fully aware that I’m inexperienced, but I was trying to be the voice of the customer in my mind. I know the customer is going to want an explanation. If he didn’t have an explanation, that’s ok. He should’ve just said he didn’t know and we could’ve kept digging. Another part of this is that he is being promoted to a management position in a different building, so this project is being handed off to me. That was another reason I was looking for a more in depth explanation.
Does this happen a lot?
Background: he has yelled like this at other employees, but I don’t think our manager or any other manager knew about this, hence why he was promoted.
