So what’s up with these Flames of War versions?

I’m just getting into FoW because I got gifted a starter box. I’ve seen in some of my usual gaming groups online people complaining about the version changes, particularly the V4 change. What’s been up with the history of the game? I figured this spot would give me a knowledgeable but unbiased view. Thanks!
