No dumb questions, right? Was my film not advancing?

Canon A1 user- I swear I remember since loading my last roll of film taking more than 4 photos, but today I picked up my camera and was at shot number 5. Is there any chance I was cocking the film advance shutter and it wasn’t working before but started working now? Did I just remember taking way too many photos? I know I won’t know what happened or what I actually took photos of until I get this roll developed, but I swore I was maybe halfway through a roll only to find out I’m NOW only halfway through.

Just trying to manage my expectations.
