Are CMDR names no longer case sensitive?

I'm getting back into Elite Dangerous, and I noticed that after creating my character, my CMDR name was displayed in all caps. What I did was I typed my CMDR name elsewhere and then just copy-pasted it into the box. My CMDR name included both uppercase and lowercase characters.

However, in places like the mission board, my CMDR name is displayed in all-caps despite copy-pasting both uppercase and lowercase characters. I remember this not being the case, and in fact there are a couple of posts in this subreddit of other players who complained about messing up their name, this one for instance.

Is it no longer the case that CMDR names are case sensitive? I just need to clear this doubt. I swear I don't have OCD, I simply like things to be a certain way unless it's not really possible (e.g. uppercase and lowercase characters in in-game names).
