How do you think Labour and National will fare in the long term?
I've been thinking about this for a while, especially after the results of the general election.
It feels like there is a growing amount of discontent towards the two biggest political parties in this country.
From what I've seen, New Zealanders (in general, not just on Reddit) strongly support things such as a capital gains tax, better public transport and more climate action. Yet it feels like neither Labour or National have offered many significant policies in this area. In general, it feels like these two parties aren't representing what the average Kiwi wants.
I do feel like a shift of voter demographics is gradually taking place, as the younger generations (Millennials, Gen Z, etc) take the place of baby boomers and the like.
The minor parties saw a lot of success from this election, most likely due to a transition away from FPP and towards MMP. I wonder what other implications this has for the future, seeing as there is mood for change at the moment. I recently learned about how in France, the once dominant Republican and Socialist parties no longer have the lion's share of the vote. The seats are now shared across a greater number of parties, with Renaissance, National Rally and the Insoumise group now being the three largest parties in the National Assembly.
What are everyone's thoughts on this?
