Buffy and the blood paradox of colonialism. An opinion.
Colonialism is bad. It uses arbitrary rules to define who is and is not part of a colonized class. Consider the blood paradox: where for a person to be Black all it takes is one Black ancestor, one drop of Black blood; where in contrast, to be indigenous, one white ancestor means you're no longer full blood, one drop of White blood y'know? Firstly, this idea is racist. But it also isn't our way, I don't think it is the way of our Black and African cousins either, so why is it so pervasive? Because it disenfranchises colonized people.
Now, with that in mind consider Buffy's situation. Her family and tribe haven't flipped out, nor did they do the investigation. From the statement I read it seems they support her. So, what is the CBC doing investigating indigenous people in the first place? Well if blood quantum can't be used to disenfranchise us anymore the colonizers have to figure out something else right? So now they're going to investigate peoples heritage and judge if we AGAIN meet THEIR standard of indigenous.
Yeah today its Buffy, but when will it be a Sinclair? I bet someone would love to say Reil wasn't Mėtis, but he didn't have kids so they might leave him alone.
