Is wanting to be approached first considered conceited? How do I get better at greetings/small talk?
Im a really shy person with low self-esteem. So while I crave interaction I almost never initiate until I need help. I feel like this has caused major issues for me that has caused me to be disliked for the following reasons: 1) when people do approach me I visibly look happy/excited and it makes me look arrogant. 2) I used to think maintaining eye contact was enough of a sign for people to initiate since I never do and from other’s POV I always have an expectant look of wanting to get approached which comes off as attention seeking. 3) when I do initiate its adrenaline taking over, my last resort for when I really need help this comes off as being transactional cause after asking for help I dont initiate again or maintain the relationship.
Overall I think my interactions with people are super inconsistent. I keep things work/surface level by only initiating when I need help. I also sometimes miss hi/hellos and unintentionally exclude/ignore others out of shyness. It also doesnt help that I think small talk is superficial and becomes repetitive people only ever say “good, you?”
