Ways atheists try to avoid the burden of proof
- God is an unfalsifiable hypothesis! He is like Sagan's dragon in the garage. It is always possible to invent some elaborate excuse to explain why the data doesn't disprove God's existence. Consequently, it is impossible to disprove God's existence. Therefore, atheists don't have any burden of proof. After all, you can only disprove what is possibly disprovable.
- You can't prove a negative! You can't prove there isn't a cosmic teapot orbiting between Earth and Mars since it is too small to be detected by telescopes. Or just invent any other elaborate negative claim that cannot be disproved ("unicorns don't exist" or whatever).
- Belief that God doesn't exist is the default position! The claim "there is no God" is the null hypothesis and that basically means you can believe it without any good reason. Isn't that convenient? It is only rational to reject the null hypothesis if there is evidence against it.
- Since theists did not present the evidence that god exists, the correct position is that there is no god. Consequently, you can believe that god doesn't exist without evidence.
