8? Not if [[Agatha of the Vile Cauldron]] has something to say about it.
If my luck has anything to say about it, that Discover 10 will draw me a second Agatha.
Which will be incredible with your 5 copies of mirror box on the field.

Doesn’t Agatha works only for creature activated abilities?
Yes, but the equipment adds those abilities to the equipped creature.
My bad, didn’t read correctly, super cool indeed
Wow didn’t know that’s how it worked honestly but that does make sense and is cool as hell
The rules do support having the permanent being attached having the activated ability, but that would mean you tap the whip to activate it. See [[Second Wind]].
The equipment grants its abilities to the creature, so it should count
Ooh, didn't even notice this gives the ability to the creature. Well, into [[Tazri, Steadfast Stalwart]] you go!
DA-DADA-DAAAAAAAAAAAH
DA-DADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Nobody caaaaaaaaaares if you upset a droiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid~
That's because droids don't teeeeeeear your arms out of sockeeeet
Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?
....what's the discover part supposed to be conveying the whip doing? lol
Indiana Jones I guess
Discover is flavored as adventuring into the unknown and finding treasures or mysteries. So, think Indiana Jones.
I would guess it's like pulling something out of reach in the caverns.
Or it's whipping open a jar in Spelunky.
If it was whipping open a jar then it should give your opponent a snake and deal 1 damage to you every single time
Roll a d6 twice, ignoring the higher of the two rolls:
1: take one damage. Target opponent creates a 1/1 snake token
2-5: create one Gold token
6: create one Gemstone token (idk make it tap & sac to add two mana of one color or smthn)
If you rolled the same number with both dice, take one damage and target opponent creates a 1/2 spider token with reach.
Grabbing a thing with the whip like Indy.
Hermit Purple's ability to find stuff and who old Joseph Joestar is based on
is this good?
it looks strong for limited
do I want an Indiana Jones alter of this card?
absolutely
it’ll be ok if it’s a slow format but pretty bad if it’s a fast format. I imagine this will be better in sealed tho where games are slower
Even in sealed I don't think you're gonna main deck this, not even very controlling decks can reliably expect to get to 10 mana. But I think it could be a good sideboard card in sealed to bring in if you're a.) A controlling deck, and b.) Your opponent is heavy on fliers.
Skaab Wrangler and Icy effects tend to be good, this is inbetween those. (which might make it slightly worse.)
Skaab Wrangler was awesome, but it was free and you could use it more than once in a turn. I think Wrangler is better than this. And icy only costs 1, which is way way easier to pay than 2.
You're probably right, I think in most formats this is going to be filler. I'm looking forwards to trying it out though, for a few reasons.
First, I recall 2 mana tappers sometimes being worth the cost in past limited formats, it's really set and deck dependent. If that turns out to be the case here, the fact that this can't be removed with creature removal could be relevant - effectively turning all your tokens into potential tappers could be pretty strong. Also, it seems like there's a subtheme in white/red of tapping untapped artifacts/creatures, and this is a free rectangle for those strategies since it does its thing without ever needing to be tapped itself.
Overall though it's probably still bad, lol.
Too clunky for limited. 2 mana plus equip 1 for each tap, and requires one of your creatures plus this card.
The primary play is to turn one of your creatures into a defensive tapper, so a one time payment of 1 and then 2 to tap each turn. White pretty much always has a defensive tapper, and it's pretty much always playable, even when it costs 2 (which it has in the past).
This costs two cards, four mana plus your creature's mana to tap anything.
And once you get it online, paying two to tap something isn't really a bargain, either.
Compare to [[Gavony Trapper]], which was playable but not good.
Gavony Trapper - (G) (SF) (txt)
^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Yeah but this costs 2 creatures and 2 mana. Those tap creatures at 2 are already fringe. Requiring 2 cards is way worse.
It is worse, but you have more options. On the right board just sitting back with a larger reach creature can end up being better than the tapper, and when the game goes long you just start fetching out value until you can overwhelm.
Yeah, wont feel so bad topdecking a weenie in lategame if you can trade it for tapping down their 6/6 bomb or whatever.
Magic is a very complex game so there are trillions of caveats but imho the primary play pattern of tappers in limited is leveraging getting ahead on mana when you are beatdown. You vomit your hand before your opponent so when run out of stuff to cast you use your tapper to spend mana to disable in combat whatever 4-5-6 drop your opponent is still playing. Of course, there are still long games that eventually come down to tempo where this effect is useful and a plethora of twists that a game can take.
My biggest concern is that this card requires you another card to do anything at all. Not just the card, but the resources to put it into play. That card is a creature that you are no longer attacking with. Again, games can stall out and suddenly you're glad the equipment sticks around, but I think this is huge in modern limited.
It's absolutely awful in limited.
Hard disagree. Reach that you can staple to a creature is decent enough on its own for how cheap the card is. Tap effects are always good in limited. This comes with its own late game stall breaker. What else do you want this thing to do, make you a sandwich?
Reach that you can staple to a creature is decent enough on its own for how cheap the card is.
Absolutely not. 75% of the decks you'll play against will never cast a flying creature against you. That makes this at best a sideboard effect, and even then, a mediocre effect.
Tap effects are always good in limited.
No they're not. Not at 2 mana to tap. 1 mana is great. 3 mana is trash. 2 mana is borderline, with sometimes being good enough (gavony trapper), sometimes not (checkpoint officer). The fact that this is on an equipment, and not on a body though makes it fall on the "not good" side of the line.
What else do you want this thing to do, make you a sandwich?
Anything that is at all actually useful. Doing 3 terrible things doesn't make this a good card.
13 years draft experience here. I know something decent when I see it. @me.
Tap effects are situational and depend on the mana to cast them. 2 mana is on the expensive side these days. Reach with no stat boost does literally nothing in many games and you need to pay 4 mana before you can tap anything at all.
It's just bad.
Situational. This is a card that is generally bad to have but can break a slow game- the threat of activation is really key. You can do game breaking things during combat or opponents turn.
This allows a huge advantage /if/ you can successfully leverage it. I think most players will be wrong to include it and a rare few decks will be able to ruin someone's day.
it looks strong for limited
My guess is that this is a huge trap. This'll be the [[toadstool admirer]] of the format, where if my opponent plays this turn 1, I know I'm playing against a bad player.

It looks like an ok card in a control deck but is definetly not a card you want to pick up early
Yeah I might actually draft this equipment. Turn my 1/1 snail into a tapper, yes please!
Genuinely surprised they didn't do Indiana Jones secret lair tie-in for this set.
Indiana Jones just released a new movie and WoTC already has a Disney connection.
Hell, I'm just happy to have a 1 mana 1 equip for my boros equipment matters deck.
Remember that this is basically just "8, T: play a random card from your deck (or put it in your hand)" if you aren't stacking the top of your deck with brainstorm or something.
Yeah this has a lot of potential for bad feels after sinking 8 and tapping down a creature. Could be a very expensive mana dork 🤷♂️
Not sure what you mean by mana dork, Discover is the same as Cascade in that it ignores land cards.
Would hit a [[Llanowar Elf]], no?
You're not wrong...
Fix: cut all the manadorks!

Seems quite decent in limited if matches go long as a form of card advantage
It would have to be a REALLY slow format. Which isn't impossible. But I'm skeptical.
good job, kitty
Thank you for the clarification, was well worth it
My ancestors have mixed feelings
Look man, what if your ancestors were whipped and then Zacama popped out of them and ate all the slavers? Would that be better?
But it's the person with the whip that gets Zacama...
A [[Kozzilek]] you want to bring? You must whip it
Pehaps his [[Desolation Twin]]? Also whip it
[[Omnicscience]] you want to attain? Got to whip it

Instant speed Ulamog? Yes please
So is the 8 mana ability when Indy gets out his gun and shoots the sword-wielding guy with crazy eyes?
Works in Standard with [[Training Grounds]] as well as the other things that help pay activated abilities, since it grants the abiility to the equipped creature.

Hey, that's my LGS! Glad they got a preview
NGL this is making me badly want some Castlevania UB!
Castlevania
Intriguing card for limited. I don't think it is very good, but it does get my imagination going.
If you can slow the game down, this will take over the late game, while being hard to answer. I could see this getting there as a control win condition if I had some good alternative ways to use cheap artifacts, defensive creatures and a good amount of removal.
I'm not sure it's any better than a jayemdae tome or something similar even in the extreme late game. Always drawing a nonland card is a plus but it will usually be grabbing 2 to 4 drops in just about any limited deck.
Swah Swah, indeed!
Hilarious with Dramatic Reversal shennigans. You can literally... "whip out" your deck.

I hate the set symbol so much, it has too much detail lines so I can barely make out what rarity this card actually is.
Cool card though, I wanna build something with it for sure.
Check the bottom left corner.
Guy whips someone from this and from the wound emerges [[Progenitus]] not blood.
I can't wait to hear "He whipped out his Progenitus onto the table."
