Would this adapter and extension cable setup work?

Energy - Charging

Hey all!

I've got the 2023 Model X and I'm trying to charge from home. However, we've only got the dryer's socket that can do Level 2 charging and can't add more (renting). The socket is deep in the garage, and well out of reach from the mobile adapter.

The socket is a 10-30R socket that can do 250 V. I'd like to get this adapter (link) that'll do 10-30P to 14-50R, then I'll use an extension cable (link) that will be where the 14-50P end of the Mobile Adapter Charger connects to.

Will this cause any potential issues? If it does work just fine, what charging current would I be at, 24 A (80% of 30 A) or 40 A (80% of 50 A)?

Thank you ahead of time for the help!

Please do not use a 14-50 adapter on the UMC.

This is how fires start.

You are correct that a 14-50 extension cord would be good due to it being rated for 50a @ 240 which is higher than the rating of the 10-30 plug.

The Dangerous part is the UMC is telling the car it can pull the full amperage which while it might not be much more, it is still allowing it to pull more amps from the outlet than the outlet and it's wiring is rated for. Yes the breaker should blow but don't rely on that and knowingly do that.

Even if you set your car to a lower charge amps, that does not guarantee it will stay at that and not reset for an unknown reasons to full. It's not worth the risk of losing everything, car and house and potential life.

Solution - Buy the 10-30 adapter for the UMC, buy or have an electrician make an extension cord with the 10-30 plugs on it with the appropriate gauge wire(or upsize). That way we aren't involving any adapters.

Thanks for the warning! Whew, glad I asked first!

Regarding the gauge wire size for the 10-30 extension cable, what size would be appropriate?

Side note - here's the UMC adapter, just buy the one you want - https://shop.tesla.com/product/gen-2-nema-adapters

Seems the minimum gauge would be 10AWG but going larger(smaller #s) wouldn't hurt. You can also use something like this - https://splitvolt.com/products/splitvolt-safety-certified-splitter-switch-nema-10-30

Repeatedly unplugging and plugging in the things into big outlets like that has the chance to weaken and loosen the contacts which can lead to the plug overheating so keep an eye on that. I wouldn't use just the straight "Y" cable either as that invites the opportunity to have both things pulling power at the same time.
