Took me a good few hours in the node editor: http://i.imgur.com/3SN2nCk.png
LED plastic material:
RayTrace alpha=0.1, IOR=1.2, filter=0.2
emit=0.5
diffuse color=white
SSS enabled, Whole Milk preset, colour changed to bright green
The glow was made using a duplicate scene, but I turned the plastic into a volumetric material, and a spot light shining down on it. That was then run through the nodes to produce the glow.
not bad, but try tor rerender the image with a environment map, the metal just loos so flat without anything to reflect. in 2009 i have done the same, but without nodes, just with luxrender :D man time flies by
if you want to see my old rendering, take a look here:

looks terrific.. i was just thinking looking at your fighter jet how much the reflections on the jet add sooo much to the render.
What fighter are you talking about?
linolafett's jet fighter wip
Ah yes I thought something looked off in my metal, but I was concentrating on the other materials.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you get the tip of the LED to light up like that? I had to fake the effect on mine
mh, the problem is, i did not fake it. i used a blueprint of a led for building it in the right proportions. then i gave the crystal a emissive material and let luxrender do the rest for me. i would suggest trying to do the same and render your led with a unbiased, physically correct renderer like lux. maybe just try to recreate my rendering, should be quite simple. just a black world environment, a white ground and just the crystal as light source. this will not work with cycles or the old blenderinternal renderers, they just cant do stuff like this :/ if thats not your aim to do it with physically correct renderers, you did quite a good job. just add an environment, or apply a reflectionmal to the metal, that would give a neat effect.
