[2435] Historical Fiction, USA, 1969

I'm sharing the prologue and most of my first chapter of my first attempt at writing a novel!
The blurb of the book will be something like: overwhelmed housewife abandons everything to join a commune, meets crazy characters along the way.
My questions:

Does the hook compel you to keep reading?

Do I need to expand each scene?

I come from a nonfiction background where brevity is valued above all else, and I think I'm struggling to fully flesh out scenes.
Everything here is background before the plot of the book really takes off, but I don't want readers to feel like it is rushed. All feedback is appreciated!
